Johnny Depp, Jude Law, and Colin Farrell to Finish Heath Ledger’s Role In The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus
February 15, 2008

When it’s all said and done, this whole Parnassus mess would probably fit nicely into a biopic on the life and times of director Terry Gilliam. When Heath Ledger passed away during production on the latest Gilliam flick, The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus we all wondered what would happen to the film. Read more
Movie Review: “Definitely, Maybe”
February 14, 2008

Several things conspire to make Definitely, Maybe seem a dicey proposition at first glance. There’s the rarely-inspiring presence of Ryan Reynolds, whose film career has, up to now, moved between mediocre comedies and mediocre action and horror films and served mostly as a demonstration of the phenomenon of ‘failing up.’ There’s also the gimmicky nature of the pitch giving off warning signs, as divorcing dad Reynolds tells his daughter Abigail Breslin the story of his life before he got married, Read more
Martin Scorsese’s Silence Your Cell Phone Commercial
February 14, 2008

I can’t stand when a cell phone goes off in a movie theater. Some inconsiderate people actually answer their phones and start talking, which is pretty much equivalent to giving everyone else in the movie theater a big F-You.
The phone companies love to make these cutesy “Silence Your Cell Phones” commercials to play prior to a movie, and here’s a new one from director Martin Scorsese. Read more

Thanks in no small part to a certain boy wizard, fantasy movies based on children’s book series are hot, hot, hot. The latest to come down the pike, The Spiderwick Chronicles, based on the popular series by Holly Black and Tony DiTerlizzi, hits the mark on almost all counts. Read more
Movie Review: “Jumper”
February 14, 2008

Slick but extremely slim, “Jumper” seemingly attempts to heed the advice of its teleporting protagonist, who at one point suggests a trip to Rome that will “skip all the boring parts.” Similarly eliding much of the exposition — or simply delivering belches of it on the fly — director Doug Liman churns out a serviceable sci-fi thriller/video game template that plays like “The Matrix Lite” and, finally, isn’t nearly as cool as its trailer.
