Oliver Stone casts parents in George W. Bush movie

Director Oliver Stone has set James Cromwell to play George Herbert Walker Bush and Ellen Burstyn to play former first lady Barbara Bush in “W,” a drama about the formative years of their son, President George W. Bush.
Josh Brolin is playing the title character, and Elizabeth Banks will play first lady Laura Bush.

“Leatherheads” wasn’t filmed here, and one of its characters played by Renee Zellweger spends part of the new movie disparaging the place, flung way atop the U.S. map as it is.
But Zellweger and her co-star, George Clooney, stopped by to thank the folks here anyway for the city’s role in the football comedy, part of a promotional whistle-stop tour Monday that included Maysville, Ky., near Clooney’s hometown.

One of the surprises from last week’s ShoWest Convention in Las Vegas was Warner Bros.’ star-studded “The Big Picture” presentation which featured some of the cast and filmmakers of the studio’s big summer movies including Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight. One person who showed up unannounced was actress Maggie Gyllenhaal, who replaces Katie Holmes as Rachel Dawes in the upcoming sequel.

Movie Review: “Stop-Loss”

Serving in Iraq is difficult enough for a young soldier, but serving over and over again is unimaginable for most of us out of uniform. Yet many in the armed forces are being asked to do just that, given the shortages of man power in both Iraq and Afghanistan. The resulting toll on relationships here at home is the subject of “Stop-Loss,” a new film by director Kimberly Peirce (“Boys Don’t Cry”). “Stop-Loss,” which stars Ryan Phillippe and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, avoids the politics of war and focuses on the soldiers’ stories as they cope with the demands of the government upon their lives as they’re asked to serve multiple tours. As the ads remind, the film is not anti-war, it’s pro-soldier. And soldiers deserve to have their stories told, over and over.

‘Horton’ Hears Another Box Office Victory

“Dr. Seuss’ Horton Hears a Who,” 20th Century Fox’s animated adaptation of the beloved children’s book, remained the top movie for a second straight weekend with $25.1 million.
Featuring the voices of Jim Carrey and Steve Carell, the movie raised its 10-day total to $85.5 million.
