“Horton Hears A Who” Tops Box Office

“Who” says business is bad?
Fox’s animated feature “Dr. Seuss’ Horton Hears a Who!” hit all its marks during the weekend, when the animated family comedy featuring the voice of Jim Carrey opened with an estimated $45.1 million to top the domestic boxoffice and re-energize a recently slack marketplace.

Warner Bros.’ prehistoric adventure “10,000 BC” dropped an acceptable 54% in its second weekend to take second place with $16.4 million and a $61.2 million cume. Summit Entertainment’s mixed-martial arts film “Never Back Down” bowed about as expected with $8.6 million in third place.

George Lucas offers sneak peek at new ‘Star Wars’

Fans never seem to get their fill of “Star Wars,” and George Lucas is happy to oblige.
Lucas offered a glimpse into the latest creation in his sci-fi universe at the theater-owners convention ShoWest on Thursday, showing a sequence from “Star Wars: The Clone Wars,” a computer-animated movie due in theaters Aug. 15. It will be followed by a TV series of the same name, to air on the Cartoon Network and TNT this fall.

This CG-animated adaptation of “Dr. Seuss’ Horton Hears a Who!” is a delight, brimming with colorful, elastic characters and bountiful wit.
To take nothing away from Fox and its Blue Sky Studios, much, much, much of this owes directly to the book published in 1954 by Theodore Geisel’s alter ego, Dr. Seuss. So credit the filmmakers for knowing a good thing when they see it. The film captures all the charm of the book from its rhyming text to its themes and fantastical characters.
