Director and actor Sydney Pollack dies at 73

Sydney Pollack was remembered by some of the elite actors he directed in films such as “Out of Africa,” “Tootsie,” and “Absence of Malice,” not only for his Academy Award-winning direction, but also for his acting talents.
Pollack, diagnosed with cancer about nine months ago, died Monday afternoon, surrounded by family, at his home in Pacific Palisades in Los Angeles, said his publicist, Leslee Dart. He was 73.

This weekend Paramount faces the sort of problem any studio would love to have.
Its blockbuster hit “Iron Man” has its first real competition … but from another Paramount release: ‘Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull,’ which opens today in 4,260 theaters domestically.
It’s doubtful that “Crystal Skull,” which returns the action-adventure franchise to the bigscreen after nearly two decades, will hurt “Iron Man” to any significant degree. But if it does, at least it’s all in the family.

For a series so steeped in romance, the eagerly awaited “Sex and the City” movie feels a trifle half-hearted. Although there’s pleasure in seeing HBO’s fabulous four reunited, writer-director Michael Patrick King doesn’t fully bridge the gap between TV and film — delivering major story flourishes but, too often, playing like a regular episode bloated to five times its customary length. Best in its small moments, the movie should find receptive gal pals congregating for the mother of all viewing parties, but appeal beyond that core should present New Line with less of a storybook finish than it doubtless would like.
