Movie Review: Step Brothers

July 28, 2008

Step Brothers

Seesawing from the gleefully stupid to the desperately stupid, “Step Brothers” is an indicator that the Judd Apatow juggernaut — which often includes star Will Ferrell and helmer Adam McKay (“Anchorman,” “Talladega Nights”) — has made one too many trips to the well. With Ferrell and John C. Reilly trying to outdo each other in impersonating self-absorbed, middle-aged 6-year-olds, the film is funny at times but lapses into the reflexive vulgarity that seems to be the default mechanism of the Apatow machinery. Movie Review: Mamma Mia!

July 16, 2008

Mama Mia!

“Take a Chance on Me” may be one of its most celebrated songs, but little risk is actually involved in “Mamma Mia! The Movie,” a predictably glossy screen adaptation of the Abba-scored musical. The pic uses virtually the same creative team behind the stage original — topped by helmer Phyllida Lloyd, making her film bow — but subs in bigscreen names like Meryl Streep and Pierce Brosnan for the leads and adds lush Greek exteriors. Movie Review: The Dark Knight

July 14, 2008

The Dark Knight

Having memorably explored the Caped Crusader’s origins in “Batman Begins,” director Christopher Nolan puts all of Gotham City under a microscope in “The Dark Knight,” the enthralling second installment of his bold, bracing and altogether heroic reinvention of the iconic franchise. An ambitious, full-bodied crime epic of gratifying scope and moral complexity, this is seriously brainy pop entertainment that satisfies every expectation raised by its hit predecessor and then some.
