Movie Review: Religulous

September 30, 2008

Religulous movie poster

Early on in Religulous, Bill Maher throws up a bar chart illustrating the number of people in America who are non-religious. That number is 16%, more than blacks, more than Jews, more than numerous other minority groups who seem to have no problem making themselves heard and getting Congress to do their bidding. Maher wonders aloud why non-religious people are so underground, and why they aren’t having an impact on the national discussion. His film is aimed squarely at that 16% of the country, and almost no one else. His goal, and he clearly has one, is to give those people the motivation they need to come out of the closet and do something… before it’s too late. Read more

Movie Review: Choke

September 26, 2008

Choke movie poster

“Choke” is the sunny, funny version of a Chuck Palahniuk movie.

The insurgent novelist’s only other book that’s been brought to the screen is “Fight Club,” though.

But really, this dirty-minded wallow in conning, fornicating and trashing our Early American heritage has been directed with a cackling light touch by stage and TV actor Clark Gregg (he’s the ex on “The New Adventures of Old Christine”). The atmosphere is totally scuzzy, but the character work is deft, the storytelling complex, and there’s even some nicely modulated redemption sneaked in amid the delusion and dysfunction and unsanitariness of it all. Eagle Eye’s increasingly chaotic and cockeyed notions of national security overwhelm fine lead performances by Shia LaBeouf in his first thoroughly adult role as Chi-town slacker Jerry, and Michelle Monaghan as Rachel, both ensnared in a cyber-conspiracy that seemingly knows no end. Read more
