Movie Review: The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

December 29, 2008

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

“The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” represents a richly satisfying serving of deep-dish Hollywood storytelling. This odd, epic tale of a man who ages backwards is presented in an impeccable classical manner, every detail tended to with fastidious devotion. An example of the most advanced technology placed entirely at the service of story and character, this significant change-of-pace from director David Fincher poses some daunting marketing challenges, even with Brad Pitt atop the cast. Strong critical support will be needed to swell interest in this absorbing, even moving, but emotionally cool film, which is simultaneously accessible and distinctive enough to catch on with a large public if luck and the zeitgeist are with it.

Movie Review: Valkyrie

December 29, 2008

Valkyrie

After a long takeoff, “Valkyrie” finally takes flight as a thriller in its second half but never soars very high. Bryan Singer’s long-awaited account of the near-miss assassination of Adolf Hitler by a ring of rebel German army officers on July 20, 1944, has visual splendor galore, but is a cold work lacking in the requisite tension and suspense. This second production from Tom Cruise and Paula Wagner at United Artists will do better than the first, “Lions for Lambs,” but is a decidedly odd choice for Christmas Day release. Read more

James L. Brooks Casts Reese Witherspoon In New Comedy

December 16, 2008

Reese Witherspoon

Director James L. Brooks is set to team with Reese Witherspoon on an untitled comedy for Columbia Pictures.

Brooks, who has directed only five films during his career and hasn’t helmed one since 2004′s “Spanglish,” has been holed up writing the screenplay for the film, which is described as an ensemble project that boasts at least three major characters — a hallmark of such Brooks films as “Broadcast News” and “Terms of Endearment.”

Movie Review: Yes Man

December 15, 2008

Yes Man

In the spectrum of Jim Carrey vehicles, “Yes Man” hews closest structurally to “Liar Liar,” offering the rubber-faced comic actor plenty of opportunities to riff — but with far too few moments that approach the explosive hilarity of that earlier movie. Genial but slim, pic is certainly a light-hearted alternative to weighty year-end awards bait, but the conceit isn’t realized fully enough to ensure the affirmative response Warner Bros. would doubtless like to hear. As is, it’s more in the realm of a definite “maybe.” Read more
