‘Transformers’ tops $200 million

Paramount’s action sequel “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” capped its dramatic debut with a vengeance, ringing up $112 million in estimated weekend box office for a competition-crunching domestic cumulative of $201.2 million since storming theaters Wednesday.

Matched against the first five days of all previous film releases, the “Transformers” tally falls below only that of last summer’s “The Dark Knight,” which debuted with $203.8 million during a Friday-to-Tuesday span. With another $181.6 million coming from overseas, the global gross for the second “Transformers” now stands at $363.2 million. Read more

Movie Review: My Sister’s Keeper

June 25, 2009

My Sister’s Keeper

Remarkable in concept and utterly exquisite in its execution, My Sister’s Keeper is a domestic drama at the deeply conflicted crossroads of family wounds and medical healing, that would have baffled even Solomon as to the ultimate value of a child. Along with the enduring dilemma of how far science should go, in prolonging patient suffering, disregarding human self-determination and quality of life issues, and challenging the inevitability of death. Movie Review: Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen

In Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, a Decepticon — one of those evil robots that looks like a junk heap of pewter shards designed by H.R. Giger — floats around in space, where it sends a ball of fire rocketing to Earth. The asteroid-like object hits the ocean, where it emerges as a prancing metallic cougar, which then vomits out a mass of ball bearings, which somehow assemble themselves into a super-thin droid that’s like a Calder sculpture made entirely of jackknives. And it’s this dude who gets down to business, attempting to steal the shard that will animate the dormant Decepticons hidden on Earth. The sheer velocity of all this shape-shifting is dizzying and funny and zigzag cool. The sequence serves no real purpose beyond dazzle for dazzle’s sake, but when you’re watching it, that’s purpose enough. Revenge of the Fallen has a number of dead spots, but every time the movie hits one, you can sit back in eager, childish anticipation of the next feat of industrial whirligig diversion. Read more
