Movie Review: How Do You Know
December 16, 2010
‘How Do You Know’ reportedly cost a whopping $120 million to make, $50 million of which went to star salaries. Put in perspective, that’s about eight times more than the production budget of last year’s Oscar winner for Best Picture, “The Hurt Locker.” Read more
Movie Review: Yogi Bear
December 16, 2010
Those of us who grew up on Yogi Bear cartoons can breathe easy: In his new movie — featuring a 3-D computer-animated Yogi (voiced by Dan Aykroyd) and Boo Boo (voiced by Justin Timberlake) alongside live action actors — our beloved pic-a-nic thief isn’t asked to whore himself by rapping, farting, or dropping pop culture references the way some of his animated brethren have in recent years. (Our condolences, Chipmunks.) Read more

Jon Favreau not directing “Iron Man 3″
December 15, 2010
Jon Favreau, the director of the first two “Iron Men” features, is not returning for the third installment of the Marvel superhero series, he said via Twitter on Tuesday.
Favreau’s negotiations to direct “Iron Man 2″ were a tough slog, and while he got $10 million for the gig, as well as a share of profits, it came close to not happening. When he did the summer 2011 sci-fi epic “Cowboys and Aliens,” his price went up. Marvel, known for keeping its costs as low as possible, wasn’t likely to pay him more. He also recently signed on to develop and direct “Magic Kingdom,” a big Disney movie based on its theme parks. Read more

Narnia Underperforms But Still Comes In No. 1
December 13, 2010
Well, that didn’t go as planned. Two high-profile films, the 3-D fantasy epic The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader and the romantic thriller The Tourist, registered inauspicious openings as the overall box office trailed last year for the fifth weekend in a row. Fox’s Dawn Treader, the third film in the franchise based on C.S. Lewis’ beloved children’s novels, led the frame with $24.5 million, according to studio estimates. That’s a disappointing opening for a series whose first two entries, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and Prince Caspian, debuted to $65.6 million and $55 million, respectively. Dawn Treader‘s opening gross puts it in a league that includes such other fantasy clunkers as Eragon and The Golden Compass. Read more
