Javier Bardem Offered ‘Bond 23′ Villain Role

January 31, 2011

Javier Bardem has been offered several great movie roles in the last couple of weeks. Life has been good for the A-list actor recently. Bardem was offered the lead role in the huge franchise The Dark Tower with Ron Howard directing the first installment of the series, nominated for (another) Academy Award for Biutiful and had a baby son with Penelope Cruz. To top it all off he was also offered the second male lead in the next James Bond film, which traditionally is the villain role. In the 23rd installment of the series Daniel Craig is returning as Bond with Sam Mendes directing. Read more

Movie Review: The Mechanic

January 28, 2011

Jason Statham is the B-movie bruiser of the moment. He appears in the occasional Guy Ritchie gangster head game, but his genre of choice is the revved-up testosterone action film. The key to his charisma is that he’s so much more cutthroat smart and elegant, and so much more coolly British, than an actor from the crash-cars-and-ask-questions-later school needs to be. With his shaved skull and handsome you-talkin’-to-me stare, he’s like a Bruce Willis mad-dog avenger crossed with a more sociopathic James Bond. Read more

Movie Review: The Rite

January 28, 2011

When Anthony Hopkins signs on to play a sinister old exorcist in a generic satanic rehash like The Rite, does he hate himself for getting hired, yet again, to trot out Hannibal Lecter’s ravenous snarl and hypnotist’s gleam? Does he stalk around between takes muttering things like ”I should be doing Lear”? Or is he only too happy to milk that Lecter leer? The Rite is set in Rome, and it presents the Vatican as having officially embraced the rituals of exorcism as a de facto enhancement of its brand. (If the devil is at large, then the church must still be relevant.) Read more

Movie Review: No Strings Attached

January 21, 2011

Can men an women be sex buddies without romantic attachment getting in the way? Of course not — this is America! Or so, at least, teaches No Strings Attached, a hedging, conservative romantic comedy directed with generational bafflement by Ghostbusters’ Ivan Reitman. The movie continues the long tradition of Hollywood rom-coms, from When Harry Met Sally… to Knocked Up, that bait with amusing, naughty sex and then switch to reassuring romantic commitment.
