Paul Newman, the legendary actor whose steely blue eyes, good-humored charm and advocacy of worthy causes made him one of the most renowned figures in American arts, has died of cancer at his home in Westport, Connecticut. He was 83.
Newman, who had been battling cancer, passed away on Friday, Newman’s Own Foundation said in a statement from Westport, Connecticut. Read more

Oprah Winfrey Will Voice Princess’ Mother in ‘Princess and the Frog’

Oprah Winfrey has joined the voice cast of the upcoming Disney animated film “The Princess and the Frog.”
At a Disney presentation in Hollywood on Wednesday, John Lasseter, the chief creative office at Pixar and Walt Disney Animation Studios, said that Winfrey will play the character of Eudora, the mother of the main character Princess Tiana, voiced by Anika Noni Rose.
The film, set for release in late 2009, is set in the French Quarter of New Orleans. Read more
Billy Crystal Joins ‘Tooth Fairy’

Taking on his first role in a live-action studio picture since 2002’s “Analyze That,” Billy Crystal will join the cast of “Tooth Fairy,” the Fox comedy that begins shooting Monday in Vancouver.
Dwayne Johnson stars with Ashley Judd, Julie Andrews, Stephen Merchant (”The Office”) and Ryan Sheckler. Johnson plays a minor league hockey player known for loosening dental work with physical play and is sentenced to serve as the real Tooth Fairy for a week. Read more
Sarah Jessica Parker Is ‘Spinning Like Butter’

Screen Media Films has picked up Sarah Jessica Parker’s racially charged drama “Spinning Like Butter” for North American distribution.
Parker produced and stars in director Mark Brokaw’s adaptation of the Rebecca Gilman play. She portrays a liberal New England college dean forced to confront hidden prejudices and political correctness when one of her few black students (Paul James) receives anonymous racist letters. Mykelti Williamson, Beau Bridges and Miranda Richardson also star. Read more

Sony’s Samuel L. Jackson thriller “Lakeview Terrace” captured the boxoffice flag this weekend with a solid $15.6 million in opening grosses.
Focus Features’ Coen brothers comedy “Burn After Reading” finished second, dropping just 41% from week-earlier opening grosses to $11.3 million for this session and a 10-day cume of $36.4 million. Lionsgate’s romantic comedy “My Best Friend’s Girl,” starring Dane Cook and Kate Hudson, bowed third with a limp $8.3 million. Read more

Universal Pictures is sending Vince Vaughn, Jon Favreau, Jason Bateman and Faizon Love on “Couples Retreat,” a Favreau-scripted, Peter Billingsley-directed comedy.
The story follows four couples who go to a tropical island resort. While one couple is there to work on their marriage, the others are there to play but soon discover that participation in the resort’s couples therapy is not optional. Read more
