Another East Coast snow storm, plus the closing weekend attraction of the Vancouver Olympics and a pair of unappealing new movie releases resulted in one of the year’s weakest box office weekends. Neither of the newbies — the Kevin Smith-directed ‘Cop Out’ or the remake of George Romero’s 1973 ‘The Crazies’ — had sufficient interest to outdraw last weekend’s leader, ‘Shutter Island.’ They barely beat ‘Avatar,’ which is chugging along in its 11th week. Paramount Pictures’ Shutter Island exceeded expectations, opening with an estimated $40.2 million from 2,991 theaters and averaging $13,440 per site. The opening marks the best ever for director Martin Scorsese and star Leonardo DiCaprio. Scorsese’s previous best was $26 million for The Departed in 2006, while DiCaprio’s best was $30 million for Catch Me If You Can in 2002. The psychological thriller, also starring Mark Ruffalo, Ben Kingsley, Michelle Williams, Patricia Clarkson and Max von Sydow, cost about $75 million to make. Read more

James Cameron’s pic easily surpassed the No. 2 film, Warner Bros.’ Mel Gibson starrer “Edge of Darkness,” which opened with $17.1 million. “Avatar’s” domestic intake has reached $594.5 million, combined with $1.45 billion internationally, for a worldwide cume that has passed the $2 billion mark. James Cameron’s “Avatar” is on a course to sink his very own “Titanic” at the box office.
No. 1 for the sixth-straight weekend with $36 million, the 20th Century Fox sci-fi spectacle lifted its domestic total to $552.8 million, according to studio estimates Sunday. “Avatar” raised its worldwide total to $1.841 billion. That’s $2 million shy of first place behind Cameron’s last movie, the 1997 shipwreck epic “Titanic,” at $1.843 billion. Read more
