Arrested Development movie script is being written
October 5, 2009
We never know what to believe anymore about the rumored Arrested Development movie, but this news seems pretty “Solid as a Rock.” Creator Mitchell Hurwitz and co-executive producer James Vallely are working on a screenplay for the long-debated feature version of the short-lived Fox series.
Hurwitz had said that he wouldn’t start writing a film unless all the main actors, including Jason Bateman, Michael Cera, David Cross, Arnett, Alia Shawkat, Portia de Rossi and Jeffrey Tambor, were committed. Scheduling might be difficult, however, as several — Bateman, Cera and Arnett — have seen their careers bloom since the series began its three-season run in 2003.
“Arrested Development,” which ran for three seasons on FOX, followed Michael Bluth (Jason Bateman) as he coped with his spoiled but bankrupt family after their patriarch is jailed. Despite a passionate following by audiences and critics, “Development” got low ratings and was cancelled in 2006.
Many believe that the series ended on a perfect note, with our hero Michael Bluth (Bateman) fulfilling a fantasy he considered in the series’ pilot: sailing off into the sunset with his son George Michael (Cera) and leaving his leeching family (well, most of them — you’ve to to watch out for those hop-ons!) behind. That said, the show was so consistently good, it’s hard to imagine a movie not living up to our wildest dreams.
What do you think: Are you scared that a movie might damage the Bluth family legacy? Or is an ‘Arrested Development’ flick and the possibility of another hour-and-a-half with the beloved dysfunctional fam an ingenious idea? If the movie does indeed happen, will George Michael and his maybe cousin Maeby get together? Will Tobias (Cross) “blue himself” again? Will Gob become a real magician, er, illusionist? For our money, we can’t wait to find out.
