Tom Cruise To Be The Villain Of Shrek 4

September 5, 2008

Tom Cruise

After his hilarious turn in Tropic Thunder, Tom Cruise’s comedic strategy for revitalizing his image seems to be on track. Next step in crafting Tom’s new public persona may be doing a little something for your kids, by voicing a character in Shrek 4.

This is still a rumor, but a source at Dreamworks says that Tom Cruise is being considered to voice one of the villains in Shrek Goes Fourth. The sequel is due out in 2010 and this time it’s being directed by Mike Mitchell, who is rumored to be something of a Tom Cruise fan.

Very little is actually known about Shrek Goes Fourth, other than that it’s supposed to reveal Shrek’s origins and explain how he got to the swamp. Does that make it a prequel? I hope not. Where would Tom Cruise’s villain character fit in, if indeed this actually happens? We don’t know that either.

Tom Cruise’s cameo in Tropic Thunder was one of the few highlights of that movie.  I think that if he keeps flexing his comedic muscles, his older fans will come back to him.  I also think it is a good idea that he is taking on some supporting roles, rather than continuing to try and headline every single movie that he is in.  As far fas Shrek 4 goes, Tom Cruise has a pretty distinctive voice and would do a good job playing a villain.  The Shrek movies don’t have any really scary moments, so I imagine Tom would be more of a silly villain.  If he can manage to get some laughs, then he will have succeeded.
