Tom Hanks to play Major Matt Mason

Tom Hanks is planning to star in a live action toy story.

The movie is called Major Matt Mason, and it’s based on a vintage Mattel action figure. The toy line originated in 1966; Mason led an astronaut team that worked on the moon and lived in a space station. The toy was a hit in the buildup to the first manned moon mission. Mattel retired the line in the 1970s.

Hanks has participated in several space-themed projects, including Apollo 13 and From the Earth to the Moon. Mattel is already at work on film versions of He-Man and Hot Wheels.

As for Hanks, he will next be seen reprising his role as Robert Langdon in Angels and Demons on May 15.
